History of the department

The Department of Avionics was established on September 1, 2004 as one of the scientific-pedagogical departments of the Institute of Aeronautics during the merger of the General M.R. Štefánik Military Aviation Academy with the Technical University of Košice according to the Act No. 455/2004 Coll. and Act No. 131/2002 Coll. about universities. After the completion of the transformation process on February 1, 2005, it became part of the Faculty of Averonautics. The employees of the department have lots of years of experience in training civil and military aviation specialists, pilots and other aviation personnel in the field of avionics, as the Department of Avionics was transformed from the Department of Avionics and Weapon Systems (established on September 1, 1992) and from its predecessor the Department of Special Aircraft Equipment established on September 1, 1979, which was part of the SNP High Military Aviation School in Košice.

The Department of Special Equipment for Aircraft was created by splitting the original Department of Special Equipment and Radio Technical Security on September 1, 1979.

Its main mission, as one of the newly established profile departments of the Military Engineering Faculty of the Higher Military Aviation School of the SNP in Košice, was to provide university education in the field of study of aeronautical electrical engineering for the specializations:

  • aviation instruments and electrical systems (ČVO 431, 432)
  • air weapon systems (ČVO 433, 437)
  • aircraft radio and radar systems (ČVO 434, 435)

It participated in the training of pilots and other members of the air force, which corresponded to the organizational structure of the department which, due to the specifics of the teaching of the mentioned specializations, consisted of three subject groups:

  • subject group of electrical and special aircraft equipment,
  • subject group of aviation equipment,
  • subject group of radio and radiolocational aircraft equipment.

The department was allocated new premises of an approved teaching building, it was gradually necessary to build a material and technical base from the ground up (specialized classrooms, laboratories and teaching aids), to create a high-quality teaching documentation.

The first teachers of the department included:

  • lieutenant colonel Ing. Milan Mayor, Lt. Col. Ing. Štefan Ďuriš, Lt. Col. Ing. Pavel Šimůnek,
  • lieutenant Ing. Miroslav Grega and Lt. Ing. Petr Cihelka.
  • In the following 10 years, the collective of teachers was gradually supplemented by:
  • Lt. Ing. Emanuel Sochor, Lt. Ing. Jozef Žitniak, Lt. Ing. František Martinec,
  • lieutenant colonel Ing. Ondrej Štrbák, Lt. Ing. Rudolf Slávka, Lt. Col. Ing. František Vodarčik,
  • Lt. Ing. Vladimír Vlasák, Ing. František Adamčík, captain Ing. Ján Labun and Lt. Ing. Jiří Němeček.

An important stage in the development of the department occurred in the early nineties. Clarification of the position of the then VVLŠ SNP in the system of education and training of aviation officers made it possible to continue the high tradition of development of applied sciences oriented towards aviation. Adequate technical background and the connection of the teachers of the department with industrial enterprises, research institutes and aviation practice, made it possible to renew and expand the professional and scientific activities of the teachers relatively quickly.

During this period, there were also significant personnel changes, and the teaching staff was supplemented by:

  • colonel prof. Ing. Tobias Lazar. Dr.Sc., major. Ing. Peter Leskovský and Lt. Col. Ing. Rudolf Klecun.

In 1992, the department was renamed to the Department of Avionics and Weapon Systems.

In the area of the educational process, a fundamental reconstruction of the teaching documentation was carried out; the theoretical and practical teaching fully corresponded to the needs of the education of military aviation professionals. Scientific work was successfully developed, the results of which were presented on various occasions at home and abroad.

The department gradually expanded with additional teachers:

  • capt. Ing. Igor Voštiar, major Ing. Daniel Kottfer, Lt. Col. RSDr. Mgr. Milan Čarnocký,
  • lieutenant colonel Ing. Ján Kabát, major Ing. Oto Hvat, Lt. Ing. Marián Dolinský, lieutenant colonel Ing. Jozef Benko, captain Ing. Juraj Beskid, major Ing. Peter Spaček and Lt. Col. Pavol Hubocký.

In November 1995, there was a change in the organizational structure of the department. The original three subject groups, i.e. the group of aircraft instruments and electrical systems, the group of aircraft radio and radiotechnical systems and the group of aircraft weapon systems, were supplemented by the group of on-board electronic systems.

In the following years, the department was supplemented by the following teachers:

  • lieutenant colonel Ing. Peter Kováčik, Lt. Ing. Jozef Kalnický, Ing. František Kmec,
  • Ing. Bartolomej Švéda, captain Ing. Róbert Bréda, Lt. Col. Ing. Rudolf Čelko,
  • Lt. Ing. Martin Bálint, Lt. Ing. Miloš Soták and RNDr. Tatiana Denisova.

In addition to broad pedagogical and scientific-professional activities, the department has also maintained a rich cultural and social life since its inception, which contributed to the strengthening of good relations between its members, their families, and students. The department's long-standing traditions included celebrations of life anniversaries and an annual sports event held on the occasion of the MDD (International Children's Day). In the year of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the department, a new tradition of fitting graduates of the department into the “Aeronautical Electrotechnical Engineering Guild" was established.
