Social scholarship
The social scholarship is financial support from the state for those university students who have a very low income and practically live only on the subsistence minimum.
The awarding of social scholarships is governed by the following legal regulations:
- Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on University Education and on Amendments to Certain Acts, as amended
- Decree of the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic no. 396/2008 Coll. on the granting of social scholarship to university students (change: 227/2012 Coll.) and other related laws that proceed in the acknowledgment of social scholarships:
- Act on Administrative Proceedings, Income Tax Act, Living Minimum Act,
- Act on Administrative Proceedings, Income Tax Law, The Land of Lifetime Act, Act on Assistance in Material Need, Act on child allowance, Social Assistance Act
A student is entitled to a social scholarship:
- who has a permanent residence on the territory of the Slovak Republic, while state citizenship is not decisive
- who is studying for the first time at a university full-time, in a bachelor's or engineering degree
A student is not entitled to a social scholarship:
- who studies in an external form of study
- who studies the relevant study program longer than its standard length,
- who is studying a first-level study program, if he has already obtained a first-level university education
- who already achieved a university education II. degree
- who was provided with a social scholarship in the relevant year of study or part of it in the study program of the relevant higher education institution.
A student with a disability may be granted a social scholarship even after exceeding the standard length of study, if this exceeding is caused by his disability.
The income of the student and the persons assessed together with him is decisive for the awarding of the social scholarship. The income limit for entitlement to social stipend and the amount of social stipend is derived, among other things, from the subsistence minimum amounts, which are adjusted annually on July 1. of the given year.

Pregnancy scholarship
From 1 April 2021, the amendment to Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on universities and on the amendment of certain laws, as amended, introducing a pregnancy scholarship for pregnant students (§ 96b). For the purposes of this law, a pregnant student is considered to be a student of the first, second and third degree of university studies in full-time and part-time form. More detailed information about the application process for the pregnancy scholarship is provided in the study department.
